Let's have our Teacher Jennifer to answer this very popular question
"The piano is no doubt, an easier music instrument to start your child on. If you are looking for 1-1 class, 5 or 6 is a good age. Here are some good guidelines to go by:
Physical Readiness
The piano is quite a huge instrument & the keys can feel quite heavy to touch. Are their motor skills somewhat developed? Can they do individual finger taps (finger independence)? Finger 1 to 2, 1 to 3, 1 to 4 so on in random orders & speed?
Mental Readiness
Playing the piano (no matter how FUN the lesson can be) requires focus & concentration. Can your child focus on an activity for a min 15 minutes?
Interest
Do they show some interest in the piano after a trial/our Experience Class? Are they curious about the sounds a piano can make?
Support & Encouragement
Probably the most important on the checklist. Playing the piano is a long-term thing. It requires YOUR help as a parent, to support & encourage your child in their music learning journey. There will be ups and downs and your little child needs you to help them. Help them set goals, establish a practice routine and listen to them when they practice.
All children love music. Not all like to translate that love by playing an instrument. And those that do and given an opportunity to learn, needs a lot of discipline and grit to sustain the learning.
"Learning a musical instrument is a long journey & take a little bit of patience but it is VERY rewarding." - Jennifer Lim
